Chapter Ten

“Ah, the Sabbath,” sighed Eliza with contentment. “Gott knew what He was doing when He ordained a day of rest.”

“Ja.” Jane sipped a cup of tea from her rocking chair on the porch. “It helps put the whole week into perspective.”

“I was thinking last night about how best to tackle this upcoming week’s work,” continued Eliza, setting her own chair to rocking. “You said you have a schedule you follow as far as things to make for selling at the farmers market?”

“Ja, sure. I try to make canned goods such as raspberry jam earlier in the week. Later in the week I make baked goods so they’ll be fresher.”

“What is the hardest thing for you? Physically, I mean?”

“Hmm. Probably the jams.”

“I think what you might want to do is draw up a list for me. Divvy out what you think you can handle while still taking it easy, as the doctor ordered. I’ll take the rest.” She rubbed her chin, considering. “I still want to try to keep up with making dolls, but I may have to let go the inventory I send to your aunt and uncle’s store until the summer rush is over.”

“I’m sure they’ll understand. Summer is busy for all of us.” She smiled at her niece as Mercy carefully climbed the porch steps. “I’ll just make it more of my job to watch Mercy. That won’t be a hardship, will it, liebling?” She reached down and pulled the toddler into her thickening lap.

Eliza chuckled. “It’s like she has two mothers.”

“She does. I couldn’t love this little one any more than if she were mine.”

“And soon you’ll have your own.”

Jane’s eyes took on a glow of love, and she glanced over at Levy, reading a book in a hammock strung between two trees. “Ja. One of my own. Of our own.”

The palpable love on her sister-in-law’s face made Eliza’s eyes prickle. She knew she had never felt that way with Bill, her Englischer husband, even at her most infatuated. Her love had been stripped away fast enough when she became pregnant with Mercy and he refused to accept the serious responsibilities of impending fatherhood.

Would she ever be able to duplicate the love between her brother and his wife? Would she ever have a man to love in the same way?

She shoved aside treacherous thoughts of Josiah. She had promised Gott to leave him alone, and she would stick to her side of the bargain. No matter what.
